Biography

Phanat Xanamane is an urban designer, with a background in Architecture, residing in New Iberia, Louisiana, where he initiates community revitalization projects. Phanat, who emigrated from Laos with his family when he was very young, was raised in the predominantly African-American ‘West End’ of New Iberia. He studied urban design at Columbia University and worked in New York City for five years and then in Bangkok, Thailand before returning home in 2010 to commit 10 years to revitalizing his hometown. He is a ‘doer’ – someone who has an idea, tosses it out to friends and neighbors for feedback, then is off to turn that idea into reality. As an openly gay Asian refugee, he has led Envision da Berry, an organization that has broken down the many racial and social barriers to provide a counter-localism for the future of the small-town American South.
